وَامْتَازُوا الْيَوْمَ أَيُّهَا الْمُجْرِمُون

[Then He will say], “But stand apart (wamtaazu) today, you criminals.”

Yasin 36:59

This ayah is talking about Judgment Day.

Wamtaazu | Word Analysis
This is in the imperative, the command form. It comes from imtiyaaz (from mayyiz) meaning to separate something that was mixed.
People in the world are mixed up (believers and disbelievers). Everyone is crossing paths, living in the same neighbourhoods, going to the same schools, going to the same jobs etc. There was no distinction between right and wrong, but there were some who were living a conscious pure lifestyle, while others living an evil and sinful life. They were crossing paths, but at the same time, they had a different lifestyle in their hearts and minds.
So on Judgment Day – Allah will command the Criminals (Disbelievers and Sinners) to themselves step out of the crowd and admit they are criminals.
This is extremely difficult, and humiliating for them because when you are guilty – you want to hide in the crowd of the people. But Allah is commanding them to separate themselves on this Day [on Judgment Day], and they have nothing they can do except obey. Yet when they step out – they know they will be punished in Hellfire too. What an evil and distressing dilemma!
May Allah not make us of the Criminals, ameen ya Allah!
