Al-Itqan fi Ulum al-Qur’an is an outstanding resource on the subject of Qur’anic Sciences, an indispensable book for the serious scholar of Qur’an and a work which amazes many for its depth, breadth, scope and lucid writing. The work is also well arranged, exhaustive in its sources and subjects, covering a vast and varied range of topics Muslims have devoted themselves to in their study of the Qur’an.
Written by the most prolific writer of his time, Abdur-Rahman b. Abi Bakr Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (rahimullah)(d. 911 AH/1505 CE), Al-Itqan is one of some 700 works that he authored during his life. A celebrated scholar, jurist expert and teacher from Egypt, al-Suyuti was sharp even as a boy. He studied various subjects including Shafi’i and Hanafi jurisprudence (fiqh), traditions (hadith), exegesis (tafsir), theology, history, rhetoric, philosophy, philology, arithmetic, timekeeping (miqat) and medicine. He completed memorizing the Qur’an at the age of 8 and at the age of 16 started teaching Shafi’i jurisprudence at the same mosque as his father did. His expertise and contributions to the Ummah are well received.
